What is Divination?

Divination has been around in some form or another for thousands of years. Ancient cultures would consult oracles for a glimpse into future events. Rituals would be performed to receive guidance from other realms. Priests would attempt to come into contact with the divine.

Modern-day divination isn’t all that different from the methods of the past. Of course, there are numerous divination methods, and in the below sections we cover some of the most popular types.

People often turn to divination when they’re going through challenging circumstances (e.g. the loss of a family member/loved one, financial difficulties, relationship problems, etc.). Whether you’re looking to start your own divination practice, or you want to learn more about the different types of divination currently being used, keep on reading.

There are actually quite a few different forms of divination, and all of them couldn’t possibly be covered in one blog post. So, that’s why we’ve only focused on the major ones. Below are over five of the most popular types of divination in the world.

Cleromancy

This form of divination is one of the oldest in the world, and it involves using small objects in a ritualistic way in order to see the past, future, or present. Many ancient cultures practiced this form of divination, and some of them still continue to this day (albeit among more rural populations and/or in certain areas of the world).

Seers used to use bones, rocks, or other natural objects in their cleromancy practice. Nowadays, most psychics prefer to use dice and/or small stones (i.e. pebbles). There are quite a few online resources regarding cleromancy, so if it’s something you’re interested in you should do some more research.

Astrology

Everyone knows what astrology is (at least we hope so). Because of its immense popularity throughout the world, you would be hard-pressed to find someone who didn’t know what astrology is.

This type of divination is all about interpreting astrological movements. Because of its strong focus on planetary movements (as well as the movements of stars), this system generally doesn’t require as much psychic ability as others.

Most people think of astrology as being all about zodiac signs/symbols. However, true astrologers know that the field is much deeper than simple birthdate symbolism. When it’s done properly, astrology can be an incredibly powerful tool for divination purposes.

Cartomancy

This form of divination involves using a deck of cards, interpreting the draws, and then relaying that information to the information-seeker. While a lot of people use normal decks of cards, you can also use tarot cards for this purpose as well.

A tarot reading can provide deep insight into a person’s future, past, and/or present. Many people all over the world use tarot readings to gain some more understanding of what’s going on in their lives.

Tarot Reading

While it’s closely related to cartomancy, tarot reading really deserves its own category. Tarot cards have been in use for hundreds of years (if not thousands). There are many different systems, types, and methods of reading tarot.

Tarot cards contain many more cards than a typical deck, and all of them have very significant meanings. For example, drawing a certain combination of cards will have a completely different meaning depending on the context of the draw.

We recommend researching online tarot readers prior to going to one for a session. You can find very detailed reviews on numerous sites.

Dowsing

Dowsing is a very old form of divination that’s generally used to provide answers to questions with a “yes” or “no.” This is where dowsing rods got their start. Basically, the way this type of divination works is by the psychic holding the rods, and then receiving the answer. The rod will respond a certain way, which represents the answer to the person’s question.

Another form of dowsing involves using a pendulum to produce answers. For example, a psychic could use a crystal pendant as a pendulum, and according to how the pendulum swings, the answer will either be “yes” or “no.”

Numerology

We couldn’t make a blog post about divination without talking about numerology. Numerologists use numbers to interpret past, future, and present events. The way it works is this: every number has a specific meaning, and different combinations of different numbers will yield different interpretations. While it certainly involves quite a bit of experience and skill, numerologists don’t necessarily need to be “psychic” in order to give good readings.
