Reading magickal books is important for witches of every experience level, but especially for budding witches!
Books generally go into far greater depth than blog posts, or other free internet resources. And while these resources absolutely can and should be utilized by those of us who are learning the craft, we often don’t know what sorts of topics to research to fill in the gaps in our knowledge.
There is no one magickal tome out there that will tell you everything there is to know about magick. Which is one of the reasons why I recommend that you get your hands on anything and everything that interests you!
But the world of magickal books is as deep as it is wide, which is an exciting reality for those of us of the bookish persuasion – there is always a delicious new text to dip into! However, its sheer size presents a daunting task for those who are new to this world.
Which books should you start with?
Today I have compiled a list of my Top 5 Magickal Books for beginners, which will get you kick-started on your magickal reading journey!
1. The Crooked Path by Kelden
This is one of the best beginner and intermediate witchcraft books I have come across to date. It is a book focused specifically on the path of “Traditional Witchcraft”, but people of any magickal tradition will learn from this book.
It is highly practical, filled with loads of bite-sized pieces of information along with many exercises that will help you shape your practice in a way that reflects your unique magick! This is one you definitely want to include in your magickal library, you will refer to it for years to come!

2. To Ride A Silver Broomstick: New Generation Witchcraft by Silver Ravenwolf
In this book, we are presented with both the science and religion of witchcraft, primarily for solo Wiccan style practitioners. It covers all of the basics you need to practice and understand witchcraft. This is a comforting read both for those starting out in the craft, as well those who are more seasoned.
Throughout this book, RavenWolf’s integrity and kindness are obvious. And she has a great sense of humor! Her knowledge is extensive and she shares it in a way that is easy to understand. I have gone back to this book many times over the years, and I always glean something useful from it.

3. True Magick: A Beginner’s Guide by Amber K
Amber answers many questions new witches have in this book, such as…
- What is magick?
- What are some of the different kinds or varieties of magick?
- How does magick work and how can I prepare for it?
This is another great primer book I’ve had for decades and is always useful.

4. The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle
Eckhart Tolle gives us the foundational tools for energy work in this book. While this is not about magick specifically… being intimately aware of our own energy and being able to ‘tap into’ the energy field of other beings, and objects is a major key of working successful spells.
On the cover there is a quote by Deepak Chopra, “One of the best books to come along in years. Every sentence rings of truth and power.” I feel the same way!

5. The Spiral Dance by Starhawk
Starhawk is a pivotal leader in the Goddess and earth-centric spirituality moment. Through this timeless book, she embraces both the scientific and spiritual in an engaging and thought-provoking away. This books is one of the foundational texts exploring witchcraft through the lens of politics, environmentalism and gender. It is accessible to those of all levels of magickal experience!
